Thanks for your elaborate response.
I wonder if there is a particular reason why you did write your own 
connection pool package.
The Apache Commons project has a package called Commons - DBCP
As far as I can see this package does the same job.
The Commons - DBCP looks quite intimidating, so I may have to spend some 
time sorting out how it works.
But this should be less time than writing my own package from scratch.
